Does Your Switchboard Need Upgrading? A Plain Guide

The switchboard is the heart of your home's electrical system, and it's also one of the most overlooked. Plenty of New Zealand homes are still running boards that are decades old and well behind current safety standards. Here's how to tell whether yours is due for an upgrade and what you actually get out of it.

The clearest sign is the old ceramic fuse board. If your board has rows of porcelain fuse holders that you have to pull out and rewire with fuse wire when something blows, it's an old setup. These boards do the basic job of breaking an overloaded circuit, but they're slow, fiddly to reset, and crucially they almost never include RCDs. That's the real shortfall.

RCDs, or residual current devices, are the safety switches that make a modern board so much safer. A standard fuse or circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload, but it won't necessarily save a person from a shock. An RCD watches for current leaking to earth, the kind that flows through someone who touches a live fault, and cuts the power in a fraction of a second. That speed is the difference between a nasty jolt and a fatal one. An old fuse board simply doesn't offer this, which is why upgrading is one of the most worthwhile safety improvements you can make to a house.

There are other signs your board is struggling. If breakers trip often, if you've run out of spare ways to add new circuits, if the board is rusty or has a burning smell, or if you've been piling appliances onto too few circuits, the board may not be coping with how the house is used today. Homes draw a lot more power than they did when many of these boards were installed, with heat pumps, multiple heaters, dishwashers, and a houseful of devices all running.

A modern switchboard upgrade typically means replacing the old fuses with circuit breakers, fitting RCDs to protect the circuits, and tidying and labelling everything so it's clear what controls what. If the wiring behind the board is also old, the electrician will let you know whether that needs attention too, because there's no point in a smart new board feeding tired old cable.

This is firmly work for a registered electrician. Switchboard work involves the mains supply and carries a serious risk of electrocution, so it's not a DIY job under New Zealand rules. A registered electrician will assess the board, talk you through what's needed, and do the work to the required standard so it's safe and signed off properly.

If your board still has ceramic fuses or no RCDs, it's worth getting it looked at. You don't have to do everything at once, but knowing where you stand lets you plan the upgrade sensibly rather than waiting for a fault to force your hand.
